B&K Technology >> news >> Formaldehyde in cosmetics

Formaldehyde has had a long history of use by the cosmetic industry. It is used in the cosmetic industry as a preservative. It is common to find formaldehyde in aqueous cosmetic formulations such as shampoo, conditioner, shower gels, liquid hand wash and bubble bath. Even products designed for children such as bubble bath and baby shampoo have formaldehyde in them. Its use is regulated by the European Community, the maximum allowed concentration expressed as free formaldehyde being 0.1% for cosmetics used for oral care, and 0.2% for all the rest. Although formaldehyde is still the sixth most popular cosmetic preservative, used primarily in shampoos and bubble baths, its use appears to be declining. Formaldehyde in cosmetics is widely understood to cause allergic skin reactions and rashes in some people. Although concentrations of formaldehyde in personal care products are generally low, everyday products can contain enough formaldehyde to trigger a reaction in people with formaldehyde sensitivities. Formaldehyde sensitivity may develop over time, due to repeated low-level exposures from an early age.
