Characteristics and Application :
Imidazolidinyl urea is an antimicrobial preservative used in cosmetics. It is chemically related to diazolidinyl urea which is used in the same way. Imidazolidinyl urea acts as a formaldehyde releaser.
Imidazolidinyl urea kills Gram-negative bacteria. It acts synergistically with the parabens to provide a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against molds, yeast, and bacteria. The combination of the two is the most widely used preservative in cosmetics.
Use :
Imidazolidinyl Urea is used as an antimicrobial agent and preservative in cosmetics and toiletries. It is very active against gram+ and gram- bacteria as a synergist in combination with parabens. The most widely used biocides ( antiseptic agents, preservatives, bactericides, slimicides, fungicides) in cosmetics are parabens, isothiazolones, formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasing substances.
Safety :
Some people have a contact allergy to imidazolidinyl urea causing dermatitis[1]. Such people are often also allergic to diazolidinyl urea.
