Description :

Propyl gallate is an anti-oxidant. It protects against oxidation by hydrogen peroxide and oxygen free radicals, in a catalytic manner similar to superoxide dismutase.

Characteristics and Application :

Propyl gallate, or propyl 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate is an ester formed by the condensation of gallic acid and propanol. It is an antioxidant added to foods containing oils and fats to prevent oxidation.

Propyl gallate prevents oxidation and thus keeps fats and oils from deteriorating or going rancid. Besides causing food spoilage, oxidation in personal care products can cause color changes, thickness and texture changes, and breakdown of active ingredients.

Uses :

Propyl gallate is used to protect oils and fats in products from oxidation.
It is used in foods, cosmetics, hair products, adhesives, and lubricants.

The personal care industry adds propyl gallate to perfume, soaps, lotions and moisturizers, lipstick and other make-up, hair care products, bath products, sunscreen, and toothpaste. In addition, the substance is added to adhesives and lubricants

Side Effects :

Recent studies found this compound to mimic estrogen similar to other xenoestrogens. This may result in male organisms developing female traits. Increased estrogen load is often associated with increased risk of developing cancer in estrogen-sensitive tissues such as ovary, breast, prostate, etc.

Propyl gallate can cause some adverse side effects, such as stomach irritation, skin irritation, and allergic reactions that constrict breathing. It also can cause extra skin sensitivity.
